Antiochus VII Tetradrachm Silver Ancient Jewish Coin, NGC Cert. AU w/ BONUS Book - The Jewish Independence was realized when Syrian King Antiochus gave permission to the Jews to coin money in their own name. This coin shows the portrait of the king on one side and the seated figure of Zeus on the other. These coins were minted from 138 to 129 B.C. The Maccabees recaptured Jerusalem from the Syrians. In doing so, the Holy Temple was cleansed and rededicated and, as such, was cause for a celebration. This must have involved the distribution of the "spoils of war" coins of Antiochus. The largest of these were the Tetradrachms, or shekels (actual coin size approximately 30mm). The event is still remembered each year during the feast of Hanukah, which involved the custom of giving gifts of coins called "Hanukkah Gelt". |
