The Women's Web Directory (WWD) is a human edited directory that specifically focuses on websites about women's issues and of interest to women. It is constructed and maintained on the basis that sites included are relative to the lives and interests of women and therefore every effort is made to ensure that websites that apply for inclusion into the WWD comply with the overall guidelines for inclusion.
As the internet and World Wide Web evolve, so too will the WWD and it is through the input and recommendations of our visitors, that we will continue to deliver high quality sites of reference, education, social and health to the women we serve.
The Web as a Search Tool
The web is growing at a phenomenal rate of speed with broader and broader sources of information. Notwithstanding the expertise of major search engines such as Google or Yahoo to maintain relevance within their search engine, there are literally thousands upon thousands of other search engines that are based on automated inclusion and those search engines rely heavily upon the honesty of the website owner and the integrity of the website being submitted. Clearly, the problem with such automated services is the simple fact that the results of a search combine elements of misrepresentation within given categories or are duplicated in categories in which they should not appear thus frustrating the searcher who is unable to take the time to sift through the results to find that which is actually sought. The problem of bad content or erroneous content within a search parameter is difficult at best to control, even for larger and more reputable search engines.
In developing the WWD we believe that quality far outweighs quantity although it is extremely important to give the individual a broad spectrum of results within their chosen search field. That is why the WWD is a human edited directory for women. Each site that is submitted to the WWD is reviewed in its entirety to ensure that the claims of the website owner are, indeed, valid; we also ensure that the placement of that website is proper in conjunction with the website's offerings. Not all websites with the WWD project are sites that have been submitted by a webmaster. There are key sites that need to be made readily available to our visitors and those major informational sites are automatically included based on the background and expertise of the department editors.
Behind the Scenes of WWD
In order to maximize your ability to find the appropriate products, services, or information, it becomes critically important that the information be contained in a properly controlled environment. Since each website submission is reviewed for accuracy and relevancy based on its content and not on its keywords, there is a higher degree of accuracy when you come to the WWD to find something. It is through our human editing that allows us to deliver to you the most relevent results that do not contain superfluous or meaningless information and that includes a website URL being presented 3 or 4 times per page simply because the author of the website has tried to submit the same website more than once.
